Little acres tree farm landscaping has planted over 30 trees in the newly designed Del Rio Civic Center space

Things are moving very quickly at the Del Rio Civic Center and our city's new Amistad Urban Oasis is really starting to take shape! We can't thank Little Acres Tree Farm enough for their tireless work and professional approach to our project. With things moving along on-schedule, we are looking forward to a big celebration this November for H-E-B's 25th Annual Feast of Sharing.

In the last few weeks the land has been cleared, irrigation installed and over 30 trees planted--with more trees to come! Our next steps for the project include most of the hardscaping--this means seating areas, planters and walkways. As part of this component, Del Rio Parks Foundation will be offering custom engraved pavers to local businesses and organizations who are interested in contributing to the project. We know how important this initiative is to the community and want everyone to be able to make their mark on a little bit of Del Rio history. Look for more details very soon on how your business or organization can support Del Rio's new Amistad Urban Oasis!

Details Announced for Amistad Urban Oasis Landscaping Project

DEL RIO, Texas -- H-E-B, the City of Del Rio and Del Rio Parks Foundation announced today details about the upcoming Amistad Urban Oasis landscaping project at the Del Rio Civic Center. Del Rio Parks Foundation has been awarded a $100,000 grant from H-E-B to complete phase one of the project.  The grant award is the culmination of many years of collaboration between H-E-B and The City of Del Rio and project completion is slated to mark the 25th Anniversary of the H-E-B Feast of Sharing on November 18th, 2017.

“H-E-B is proud of our relationship with the City of Del Rio and is very happy to be sponsoring the Amistad Urban Oasis. This space will be a wonderful addition to the City of Del Rio and to our annual Feast of Sharing dinners at the Del Rio Civic Center.” Said Danny Flores, Senior Manager, Public Affairs of San Antonio.

The title, Amistad Urban Oasis, was selected by collaborators and designers of the gardenscape to reflect the scope and uniqueness of the multipurpose space.  Nestled just off a busy thoroughfare, the garden will provide a quiet respite for residents and visitors looking to enjoy a natural sanctuary in the heart of the city. Landscape features will include a mural, custom fountain, walkways, intimate seating areas, and native Texas plants that will spotlight Southwest Texas’ distinctive character and beauty.

“We are honored to be awarded the grant by H-E-B and passionate about bringing this idea to life,” said Laura Gill, Del Rio Parks Foundation President. “This will serve as a centerpiece for the city and add to the treasured natural landmarks that our region has to offer.”

A ceremonial groundbreaking will occur on Saturday, April 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Del Rio Civic Center, and will be attended by local dignitaries, project members and H.E.B. corporate staff. The ceremony will take place during the 2017 Earth Day celebration which will include local dance groups, music and educational activities.

"The Amistad Urban Oasis project symbolizes the intersection of the gracious partnership we've shared with H-E-B, the commitment of our city staff and local organizations, and the wonderful opportunity we have to utilize this outdoor space for the benefit of everyone in the community," said Mayor Robert Garza." To be able to break ground on such a meaningful occasion as Earth Day is an added benefit that aligns perfectly with the spirit of the project."

The Civic Center landscaping project is planned for several phases, with the initial grant going towards beautification of the center median. Included in the initial design are spaces which will be open for sponsorship and dedication from area businesses, organizations and individuals. A mural space is also available and the planning committee is currently seeking to commission an artist for the 60-foot space. Throughout the project the Del Rio Parks Foundation will also be planning several educational and community involvement activities.

“H-E-B is continually looking for ways in the community to enhance the use of natural resources to better serve the local community,” said Linda Tovar, H-E-B Border Region Senior Manager, Public Affairs. “We want to thank the many community leaders that helped bring the Amistad Urban Oasis to life.”

More information about the project will be made available on the City of Del Rio and Del Rio Parks Foundation websites.
