Del Rio Parks Foundation Announces 2017 Education Series

For Immediate Release
February 23rd, 2018

Del Rio, TX-- The Del Rio Parks Foundation announced today details about it’s 2017 Education Series. The inaugural series will hosts its next event on March 2nd and classes will be offered through the month of July. As part of the Series the Foundation will also be visiting classrooms throughout the school district to give lessons on the basics of food systems and nutrition. The Foundation was awarded a grant from Walmart of Del Rio to offer the Series, which is aimed at engaging local residents of all ages with informative and instructional programming.

Education and community enrichment are a primary goal of the Del Rio Parks Foundation and the demand for learning opportunities was high during previous Foundation events. Seeing the interest, the Foundation leadership pursued the creation of the Series.

“One of the fundamental missions of the Del Rio Parks Foundation is to enrich the quality of life for the community,” said Monica Salazar, Board member of the Del Rio Parks Foundation. “An effective way to do this is by providing free educational classes to the public, led by local experts in healthy eating, gardening and sustainability.”

Seeing an abundance of local knowledge and expertise, the Foundation recruited area experts to share their crafts with the broader community.

“After making so many wonderful connections creating Bounty & Brew, we realized we had an untapped resource in our local farmers, gardeners and nature enthusiasts,” said Laura Gill, Foundation President. “All of our instructors have been incredibly gracious to give their time and share their talents, and we are very excited to be able to offer this to the community.”

The 2017 Series kicked off with a Mystery Box Cooking Class, let by local chef Adan Cortez. The unique event saw local residents bring in random pantry items, which Chef Cortez and his student assistants turned into delectable dishes on site. Several sessions of the challenge will be held during the spring.

On March 2nd local farmer and food expert Maria Onofre will be presenting How Fresh is Fresh, a class which discusses topics such as food systems, seasonal planting and nutritional variances. Onofre is also available throughout the spring and summer to present in classroom settings. Teachers or administrators interested in scheduling a visit should contact the Del Rio Parks Foundation.

Other classes in the series will also include birding with local writer and birdwatcher Karen Gleason, gardening for small spaces with Kris Reichart-Anderson, a backyard greenhouse tour with Rafael Flores of the Armpit of Texas Cooking Show, and a women’s homesteading class with Minda Pfeil of Hudspeth River Ranch.

The classes are free, open to the public and refreshments will be provided. To view the full calendar of events and find session details, visit www.delrioparksfoundation.com/2017-education-series.

Del Rio Parks Foundation Announces it's Entry to the Levitt AMP [Your City] Grant Awards

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Del Rio Parks Foundation Announces it's Entry to the Levitt AMP [Your City] Grant Awards

November 1, 2016 — The Del Rio Parks Foundation is now in the running to bring a 10-12 week live music series to Del Rio in 2017.

Sponsored by the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation, a national foundation dedicated to strengthening the social fabric of America through free live music, the Del Rio Parks Foundation hopes to qualify as one of 15 winning organizations competing in the Levitt AMP [Your City] Grant Awards.

The Levitt AMP [Your City] Grant Awards are an exciting matching grant opportunity created by the Levitt Foundation to serve small to mid-sized towns and cities with populations up to 400,000. Up to fifteen nonprofits will receive $25,000 each in matching funds to produce their own Levitt AMP Music Series—an outdoor, free concert series featuring a diverse lineup of professional musicians.

The Del Rio Parks Foundation submitted the proposal for the city of Del Rio, Tx. The proposed venue site is the San Felipe Creek Green Space. Del Rio's proposal is now posted on the Levitt AMP website for public voting. http://levittamp.org

A successful campaign for Del Rio, TX depends on community participation to get as many online votes as possible to bring the concert series to town. Community support, as measured by the number of online votes received, will be one of the key factors when the Levitt Foundation selects up to 15 winners.

Supporters are asked to visit https://grant.levittamp.org/voter-registration-page/ to register and vote. Online public voting is now open and ends November 21 at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. The Top 25 finalists will be selected through online public voting. The Levitt Foundation will then review the proposals of these 25 finalists and will select up to 15 Levitt AMP winners, which will be announced on January 5, 2017.

Laura Gill, Del Rio Parks Foundation President, said “We are very excited to be under consideration for a Levitt AMP [Your City] Grant Awards. This is a huge opportunity for our community and with everyone’s support, we can bring an exciting concert series to the people of Del Rio. There will be something for everyone so we are really encouraging every member of the community to cast their vote."

The Del Rio Parks Foundation asks supporters to start spreading the word to family, friends, colleagues and neighbors and rally the community to sign up and vote for Del Rio’s proposal.

Del Rio Parks Foundation Announces Title Sponsorship and Entertainment Lineup for Inaugural Bounty & Brew Event

For Immediate Release

Del Rio Parks Foundation Announces Title Sponsorship and Entertainment Lineup for Inaugural

Bounty & Brew Event

Del Rio, TX-- Marking one month until the inaugural fundraiser, The Del Rio Parks Foundation announced today details about its Bounty & Brew Local Food and Texas Craft Beer Tasting event slated to take place at the Del Rio Community Garden in Del Rio, Texas. Texas Farm Bureau Insurance, in cooperation with the Hurta family, have joined on as title sponsors of the event, and Red River Waste Management has committed support for the execution of a zero waste event—a first of its kind in Del Rio. Two local music groups have also signed on to provide entertainment for the evening.

Bounty & Brew was conceptualized as an innovative way to raise funds for the Del Rio Parks Foundation, while connecting chefs, ranchers, farmers and other food producers in the Southwest Texas region with the community at large for a night of food, beer, revelry and sustainability awareness.

“Aside from raising funds for our Foundation projects, we really hope to highlight the ways in which we can all buy and eat more locally,” said Laura Gill, President of the Del Rio Parks Foundation. “All of the featured chefs and food producers are doing very exciting things in the community. They will be working together to create seasonal artisan small plates and we can’t wait to see the outcome of these collaborations.”

The event would not be possible without the support of Texas Farm Bureau Insurance and John and Katelyn Hurta.

“We're proud and extremely excited to sponsor the Bounty and Brew event,” said Katelyn. “As agricultural producers ourselves, and strong advocates of the industry, we hope that events such as these will spread awareness and spark community support for local producers and their products.”

Bounty & Brew is proud to feature food generously donated by Hargrove Ranch, Hudspeth River Ranch, Rancho Ojo de Agua, Granja La Negra and Robert’s Honey. Local chefs, businesses and food enthusiasts contributing their culinary talents include Chef Adan Cortez, Lou’s Woodfire Pizza, Fragola’s Catering, Lou’s Guiltless Goodies, Armpit of Texas Cooking Show, Mike Tanaka, Elizabeth MacTavish, and Sweet Popping Kettle Corn. Non alcoholic beverages will be contributed by Eva and David's Alkaline Water Store and The Solution.

Local Texas Brewery Freetail Beer, in conjunction with Silver Eagle Distributors, will provide a festive assortment of their beer line to fundraiser attendees and craft beer experts will be on-hand to discuss the selection.

The Del Rio Parks Foundation is also partnering with the Del Rio High School Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department. Students in Chef Adan Cortez’s culinary program will be doing research and conducting interviews with each chef and food producer, as well as providing support to them on-site at the event.

“One of the objectives of CTE is to give our students the opportunity to participate in the field of study that they will be endorsed in for graduation,” said Chef Adan Cortez  “As for the Culinary Arts program, part of our curriculum is to teach our students about sustainable living and the use of local and regional products for developing flavor profiles and menus. It is an honor for us to be involved in the development of this community project and fundraising event.”

Additional spots are open for chefs and producers wishing to participate in the event and featured stories on all partners will be posted on the Del Rio Parks Foundation page in the coming weeks.

Live musical entertainment will be provided by George and the Watchtowers, a Del Rio musical act that plays classic rock favorites, Americana and more. Between live sets DJ INTLKT will be spinning a modern fusion of hip hop and jazz music.

Tickets to Bounty & Brew are $30 in advance and can be purchased at bountyandbrew.com. Ticket prices will increase to $40 at the door. There is limited capacity for this event, so attendees are encourage to purchase tickets in advance.
